Kathmandu Metropolitan City to Cancel Licenses of Inactive Schools
Kathmandu Metropolitan City initiates on-site inspections and educational reforms to improve quality, accountability, and standards in local schools.

Kathmandu, 28 Shrawan 2082 – Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has announced that it will begin the process of deregistering institutional schools that are registered but not in operation. The decision was made during a Municipal Education Committee meeting chaired by Mayor Balendra Shah, aiming to enhance accountability and improve the education system within the metropolitan area.
The meeting, held on Wednesday, was attended by Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol, Chief Administrative Officer Saroj Guragai, Education and Health Committee Coordinator Chin Kaji Maharjan, members of the municipal executive, education experts, school representatives, parent associations, and representatives from institutional school organizations.
Key Decisions from the Meeting
The committee discussed multiple agendas, including:

Addition of Classes & Subjects:

Ranidevi Secondary School in Ranibari, Kathmandu-3, has been approved to operate Grade 10 from the 2082 academic session.

Pashupati Mitra, Geetamata, Janakalyan, Janapath, and Nepal Adarsha Secondary Schools have been permitted to introduce Civil and Computer Engineering in Grade 12 under the technical stream.

Approval for Name Changes:

21 schools received permission to change their names after completing the necessary documentation.

Other pending requests within the 35-day public notice period will be decided later.

Relocation of Alternative Schools:

Relocation permission granted to Mahila Jyoti, Jayna, and James Model alternative schools.

The Education and Health Committee will prepare relocation guidelines for institutional schools to be presented in the next meeting.

Inactive School Inspections:

For schools existing only on paper or never operational, KMC’s Education Department will conduct on-site inspections before recommending license cancellations.

Educational Reforms and Budget Review
The committee also decided to:

Review the education sector budget for FY 2082/83.

Assess the relevance of the "Book Free Friday" program within 15 days.

Form a taskforce led by Dr. Surya Raj Kafle to provide recommendations for improving community schools. This will cover operational standards, social/resource mapping, infrastructure development, educational quality, and long-term planning.

Initiate documentation and statute registration for Early Childhood Development (ECD) programs.

KMC officials stated that these measures are aimed at raising the quality of education, ensuring that all schools operate according to standards, and holding institutions accountable for their operations. The city plans to strictly monitor compliance while supporting reforms that benefit students, parents, and the overall education system in Kathmandu.
